Introduction to ScarWork

After surgery, scars can cause lasting discomfort and adhesions can restrict mobility. Learning techniques to help soften and release scar tissue is useful for many physical therapy practitioners including massage therapists, osteopaths, physiotherapists and chiropractors. On this one day practical workshop participants will learn 6 ScarWork techniques developed by Sharon Wheeler to improve old and new surgical scars, such as scars from cancer surgery, knee and hip replacements, c-section and hysterectomy scars.

These techniques are simple, but effective and minimal strain is placed on the therapist’s hands. There are over 30 techniques developed by Sharon Wheeler used in ScarWork, depending on the presentation of the scar, and in this course we cover some core techniques suitable for use on most scar presentations.

Participants will have an introduction to ScarWork therapy followed by a practical demonstration. Students will have the opportunity to practice the techniques in paired working and finish the day with a session with volunteer models with a variety of post-operative scars.
